It is often difficult to quantify the excesses of the rich and powerful. Of course, we can time the total cost of a red carpet outfit, do some napkin math to figure out how much a grand gala must have cost, or look at supermansion price lists like I’m very jealous hawks. But for most of the things that separate the Famous from us NOrmals, it’s very difficult to get a detailed list of all the ways they are simply better than us mere mortals.
The exception to this rule, usually, is the use of a private jet, as flight records are common knowledge and must be registered with various airports-Therefore a whole small cottage industry of blogs and accounts who monitor the flight times of the hoi polloi. And, now, a new rolling stone room showcasing some of the largest private jet users in the world (and their subsequent carbon emissions)with Taylor Swift topping the list with 170 flights flown by her private jet this year so far, and counting.
Presumably rRealizing that the optics on this aren’t great – private jet flying is more harmful to the environment than almost any other action an individual can take (while being a small fraction of emissions emitted by the fossil fuel industry, natch) – Swift’s team quickly released a statement for rolling stonemaking it clear that Swift isn’t even on most of these flights. Being a generous soul, she lends her jet generously, apparently, so she’s not the one taking the flights. (It’s…still his plane, though? We’re not sure how that statement helps, if we’re being honest.)
None of this has stopped a healthy crop of teasing jokes about Swift’s airplane use from popping up all over the internet today, in a very “My statement about not taking a lot of private jet flights has a lot of people laughing at my private jet use” in a way. (Lots of GIFs of random people traveling in helicopters are involved.)
In addition to Swift, others named in the list (assembled by sustainability marketing firm Yard, working with data culled from Celebrity jets) include professional athletes Floyd Mayweather (177 flights) and Alex Rodriguez (106 flights), as well as Jay-Z, who is credited with all the flights flown by Puma’s private jet, as the brand apparently purchased the aircraft at his suggestion. Steven Spielberg, Blake Shelton, Oprah Winfrey, Kim Kardashian, Mark Wahlberg and Travis Scott are also among the Top 10 flight takers, all of whom would thus have a carbon footprint several hundred times greater than that of the average American.
