Haitian migrants found dead in waters off Puerto Rico, dozens more found safe on uninhabited island

The bodies of five Haitian migrants were found Thursday morning in the waters off Mona Island, an uninhabited landmass between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, the Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard located 66 survivors safe and sound on the island, including two minors.

Smugglers dropped off the migrants off Thursday morning, the coast guard said.

From July 8 to 17, more than 471 people were killed, injured or missing in Haiti, according to the UN.

More than 6,100 Haitian migrants have been apprehended by the Coast Guard since last October, a sharp increase from the 1,527 Haitian migrants who were apprehended in fiscal year 2021 and the 418 who were apprehended in the financial year 2020.
